Theoretical Models

Indimage's model of work:

Vision:

Indimage was founded with the goal of realizing the right to education in Israel in general, and the Arab minority's right to equal education in particular.

Goals:

The organization's goal is to diminish the gaps between the curricula and teaching methods prevalent in Arab and Hebrew schools in Israel, both on the individual level and on the principle level. We assist in realizing the right of Arab schools in Israel to educate the children while using curricula which are suitable for their language, culture and identity. In addition, we assist in realizing the right of Arab pupils to benefit from computerized teaching methods, which promote critical thinking.

Indimage collaborates with Arab-Palestinian organizations in Israel.

On the individual level, Indimage provides services to schools which include assistance in developing curricula and learning materials. Indimage has the knowledge and expertise in the following fields: development of curricula for mixed classes, development of curricula that promote critical thinking, and curricula which are based on computerized education.
In addition, Indimage allocates resources for Arab education institutions and develops continuing education programs.

On the principle level, Indimage publishes articles, position papers and brings cases before the Israeli court in order to influence policy makers.
In addition, Indimage strives to influence the positions of educators by conducting seminars and workshops on curricula development, education for critical thinking, democracy and human rights education.

Previous models:

1. A common narrative as a model for peace education - curricula that include an Israeli narrative, which consists of a Zionist narrative and a Palestinian narrative, can serve as an effective pedagogical tool which will pave the way for the end of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Education is a primary tool in the formation of identities. Through the official Israeli educational system, identities that promote peace can be fostered within the Israeli society.

Flowchart No. 1 reflects Indimage’s viewpoint regarding the connection between education and the creation of a civil Israeli society that cherishes peace, or a militaristic society that always prepares for war.

Indimage aims to change Israeli educational curricula in order to create a peaceful Israeli society, a society which allows for both Arab and Israeli identities to exist on an equal basis. Indimage strives to allow for the creation of a shared identity among both national groups. This shared identity can only be created once a common narrative regarding the land’s history is taught within both Arab and Jewish schools. This narrative needs to include aspects of both nations’ stories in order to convey the conflict over the land from both groups’ perspectives; it needs to convey that both nations are responsible for the conflict; and it should include successful examples of cooperation between both groups. In addition, teaching both Hebrew and Arabic in all public schools as well as democracy and human rights education is also essential in creating this shared identity.

Common Historical Narrative

Teaching different historical narratives to Jews and Arabs in Israel leads to the perpetuation of conflict and war, as illustrated below in Flowchart No. 2.

Implementing this model, which integrates both national narratives, may pave the way for the end of the conflict and for peace, as illustrated below in Flowchart No. 3.
